Recurrent, severe, and rapidly reversible apical ballooning syndrome in status asthmaticus.

چکیده
Apical ballooning syndrome, or Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy, is a peculiar form of transient left-ventricular dysfunction originally described as triggered by emotional stress. Subsequent reports indicated that physical stressors can also induce this clinical syndrome. We describe for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a case of recurrent, severe, and quickly reversible apical ballooning syndrome provoked by the use of high-dose inhaled β-adrenergic agonists in status asthmaticus.

A case of apical ballooning syndrome in a male with status asthmaticus; highlighting the role of B2 agonists in the pathophysiology of a reversible cardiomyopathy
Apical ballooning syndrome (ABS), also known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, was first reported by Dote and colleagues in Japanese literature in 1991 in a review of five cases. Case series have highlighted the association of severe psychological stressors as the major precipitating factors of this syndrome. Status Epilepticus and Sub-Arachnoid hemorrhage are also now established independent etiolo...
متن کاملAcute, reversible left ventricular dysfunction in status asthmaticus.
Three cases of rapidly reversible severe myocardial depression are described in patients with status asthmaticus. Initial echocardiograms obtained within 1 day of hospital admission revealed global left ventricular hypokinesis with ejection fractions of 11 to 34%. Follow-up echocardiograms obtained only 3 to 8 days later revealed marked improvement of left ventricular function. Possible mechani...
متن کاملTransient Left Ventricular Apical Ballooning Syndrome and Cardiac Dysfunction after Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Similar Clinical Entities?
Universally accepted diagnostic criteria for transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome are not yet available and the cardiac dysfunction complicating subarachnoid hemorrhage drops several hints of discussion about the clinical and pathophysiological similarities with the “typical” transient left ventricular apical ballooning syndrome. We suggest that, in the light of clinical and pa...
متن کاملComparison of the clinical characteristics of apical and non-apical variants of "broken heart" (takotsubo) syndrome in the United States.
OBJECTIVES The present study was designed to delineate and compare the clinical characteristics of patients with apical and non-apical takotsubo syndrome in a high-volume U.S. hospital. BACKGROUND A comparison between apical and non-apical variants of the "broken heart," or takotsubo syndrome, has not been performed in the United States. METHODS From 2004 through 2007, patients with takotsu...
متن کاملDynamic Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction with Cardiogenic Shock in Apical Ballooning Syndrome.
UNLABELLED Apical ballooning syndrome, also called Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, is characterized by transient systolic dysfunction of mid to apical segments and hyperkinesis of basal segments of the left ventricle that mimic acute myocardial infarction without significant coronary artery stenosis. We reported a 51-year-old man with chest distress, hypotension and abnormal electrocardiogram. Echoca...
